Shanghai parks guide — green spaces, entry fees and annual passes
Shanghai is greener than most people expect: hundreds of parks, 45 km of riverside greenways, and some of China's best botanical gardens. Here's the field guide to what's free, what costs, and the annual-pass trick.
The free parks everyone loves
| Park | Why go |
|---|---|
| 中山公园 (Zhongshan Park) | Historic central park, lawns, great for a picnic; metro-adjacent |
| 鲁迅公园 (Lu Xun Park) | Green, calm, lakeside — local life at its best |
| 徐家汇公园 (Xujiahui Park) | Modern landscaped park near the old concession |
| 静安公园 (Jing'an Park) | Small, beautiful, bamboo groves — a pocket of quiet |
| 复兴公园 (Fuxing Park) | French Concession classic, rose garden, people-watching |
| 滨江绿地 (riverside parks) | Linear parks along the Huangpu — see the greenway section below |
Most urban parks are free, open daily (usually 5:00-21:00+), and perfect for jogging, picnics and badminton.
The paid parks worth the ticket
| Park | Entry (approx.) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 世纪公园 (Century Park) | ~¥10 | 140 hectares in Pudong — lakes, big lawns, flower shows; the biggest city park |
| 上海动物园 (Shanghai Zoo) | ~¥40 | One of China's best city zoos; pandas, giant halls; family favorite |
| 上海植物园 (Shanghai Botanical Garden) | ~¥15-20 | Seasonal flower shows (spring cherry & azalea are spectacular) |
| 辰山植物园 (Chenshan Botanical Garden) | ~¥60 | The showstopper: enormous, world-class greenhouses, seasonal displays — worth the trip west |
| 共青森林公园 (Gongqing Forest Park) | ~¥15 | Shanghai's forest — woods, lakes, BBQ zones, camping vibes |
| 滨江森林公园 (Riverside Forest Park) | ~¥20 | River mouth park near the Yangtze — windswept and spacious |
Annual passes: when they pay off
- Chenshan Botanical Garden: an annual pass exists and pays for itself in 2-3 visits — the right call if you'll go for the seasonal shows.
- Shanghai Zoo: annual pass options for residents (bring ID/passport); worth it for families.
- Century Park: annual pass pays off for daily joggers — check current prices at the gate or mini-program.
- Buy at the gate or online: most parks sell passes through their WeChat mini-programs; bring your passport.
- Note: Shanghai has no single city-wide park annual card (unlike some cities) — passes are per-attraction.
The riverside greenways
- The Huangpu riverside greenways (黄浦江滨江) — roughly 45 km of car-free promenade along both banks, from the Yangpu waterfront in the north down through the Bund and Xuhui in the south.
- Free, 24/7, with running paths, cycle lanes, cafes and viewing decks.
- The Bund (外滩) section is the classic sunset walk; the Pudong side gives you the skyline view across the water; the West Bund (西岸) adds art museums along the path.
- See the cycling guide for riding it, and the fitness guide for running culture.
Parks and dogs
- Many parks ban dogs entirely (especially formal gardens and paid attractions).
- Some green spaces and riverside stretches allow leashed dogs — the dog license and a leash are non-negotiable; carry clean-up bags.
- Ask the park's mini-program or signage; when in doubt, choose riverside paths over formal parks.
Planning visits: apps and booking
- Bookings: major paid parks (Chenshan, Zoo, Botanical) use WeChat mini-program tickets — some need a booking slot on holidays.
- Holidays: Spring Festival, National Day and cherry-blossom weekends are packed — go early (before 9:00) or skip.
- Amap (高德地图): the best way to find nearby parks, see opening hours, and navigate there.
- Picnics: mats and snacks are welcome at most parks; BBQ is only in designated zones (Gongqing, Riverside Forest).
